The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks” and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.
This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.
Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISPs have been wanting to do for years.
But we can stop it.
If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about safeguarding our internet freedom have our support.
I for one am so sick and tired of this single minded profite gouging from big time corperations. The laws do not apply to these service providers more often than not. You are not allowed to run a monopoly, but 90% of business out there run semi-monopolies, meaning that people who live in certain areas or profit margins have absolutely no other option but to use their service or go without.
There are thousands of people who are serviced by Virgin ONLY BECAUSE no other ISP will provide service in their area. The same applies to Power Companies, Phone Companies, and Cable Companies. This is more and more true of Rural areas, such as mine. If you live too far from the main road, don't expect the cable companies to run a wire to your house. You've got to use Satellite. Don't expect internet providers to be bidding on your contract either, you've got few options.
I am sick and tired of the lack of choices left to use by Corperate Service Providers. I can drive from here to downtown, and have more than 450 places where I can eat breakfast, but I want internet, I've only got one stinken option? What is that about? _________________

Virgin, as an ISP, currently only operates in the United Kingdom. However if not stopped, the trend will catch on to other ISPs and soon the only sites we will be able to view at a decent speed will be those of large media corporations who can afford to pay for exposure.
I fear sites like InfoHub and Demonoid will soon become almost innaccessible.
Not to mention the effect this would have on online games such as World of Warcraft. Yes, Blizzard would probably be able to pay the ISPs but they would have to charge a very expensive monthly fee to their users in order to keep up.
Virgin is trying to turn the internet into nothing more than something that resembles cable TV where the user pays for certain channels and nothing else.
