My friend, who is currently in Seattle, Washington (my favourite city, having been there on three previous occasions) has presented me with a question. He wants to know whether he should restock his depleted bread supplies with rye, or pumpernickel.

In an effort to determine what separated pumpernickel from rye (many restaurants try to pass off rye as pumpernickel, there is a difference) I found the following etymology:

[German, probably from dialectal, term of abuse : obsolete Pumper, breaking wind (from dialectal pumpern, to break wind, from Middle High German, to knock, frequentative of pumpen, of imitative origin) + German Nickel, goblin.]

If I understood this correctly, it means to knock the farts out of a goblin in an abusive manner.

I can only assume that regular rye bread is still full of goblin farts.
