If you were going to hide important meds from a family memeber, where would you hide them?

I have a friend that is bi polar and lives with his grandparents. The problem he is having is that when he goes to stay a few days with his mother she takes his meds. He has tried hiding them EVERYWHERE in the house, but she seems to find them. He has tried hiding them in her room, in the floor, in the kitchen (since she doesn't cook). He stated that he has tried hiding them on himself as well, but she searches him as well...
Can anyone here suggest something please? Being off his meds messes him up for a week or so afterwards... i am asking on his behalf...

Here's a little video that may be helpful for him... It's step by step instructions on how to make a portable secret storage safe in an aerosol can. But below it I have some more detailed advice that will help your friend get away with what he's looking to do.

Personally, I'd use a Bug Repellent can such as Off Brand mesquitto spray or something of the sort.

My advice to you, though it may be a shade expensive, is that instead of pulling out the spray tube after you've cut off the bottum of the can, cut it to about half of it's original length. Then, before you go on with the rest of the steps involved in making the bottle into a safe, have someone who is good with hardward, rig up a device like this:

A Valve Insert:

It's basically just an valve insert that you can affix inside your can that will allow you to put air into forming pressure. Before you put this insert in place, mix up some water with some lemon juice or just about anything to give it sent, then hold the can upside down and pour the water in around the spray tube. Now take your valve insert and place it down in the can at around the half way point of the can, with just a little space seperating it from the bottom of your spray tube. Seal this with appoxy, prefferably a nice industrial grade, because it can bind metal and will not faulter under a littler pressurized air.

PLEASE NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PUT THE WATER IN BEFORE SEALING THE VALVE INSERT TO THE CAN.

Once your valve is sealed and dried (with the water already in the can), go ahead and pump some air into it. Not too much, just a little at a time. Make sure to test it by holding the bottle upright and spraying out a bit of water. The fact that it can spray, will deture most people from trying to unscrew the bottom. It's otherwise very suspicious to carry around and empty spray can.

Also, instead of wasting time and space by packing the can with newspaper so your container doesn't move, I would just get a piece of styrofoam and cut it into a ring that fits snuggly around your container and into the can, you can duct tape this in place, don't glue it though, as most glue eats styrofoam.

For your contianer, I would recommed and old pill bottle, becauce once the pills are inside he can pack it with cotton balls to keep the pills from rattling and giving away the secret.

On a side note, I think your friend should stand up to his mother and not let her search him and take the pills. If he truely doesn't want her to take the pills, he can stop her. If worse comes to worse, he could tell the grandparents and they'd probably restrict her from being around him. It may cause a fight, but it sounds like it'd be worth it.

Other possible hiding places:

1) Get some sneakers and pull out the insole. Now use a crafting knife to take out a chunk exposing the heel of the sole, set this piece aside as it will become the cover. Carve out a space big enough to hold a few pills (this space is known as "the well") and then attach velcro to the cover and the well, so that they grasp each other nicely. Place the cover back over the well, and then re-insert the insole. I can't guarentee this will be a large enough storage space for a lot of pills, but it should hold one over.

2) Take apart a CD Player or walkman and tape a few inside where they won't stop the device from working. Hide the screwdriver outside the house (such as at a neighbor's or burried somewhere). The device should be portable and common enough to take around (out of her site) without arousing suspicion.

3) Store the pills with a neighbor or friend who lives in the area.

4) Hide the pills outside where the water guage is; near the road, under inside a half-burried black plasic box. A ziplock bag should do fine for this purpose.

5) Get one of those magnetic key holders and keep the pills in it, simply attach it to the underside of her car somewhere.

It's a good idea to have multiple hiding spots, just in case one is found.

he is 16 yrs old and as far as i can tell he does not want to lose contact with his mother (he loves his mother and likes to see her when he can)... she herself is bi polar and when she takes his pills from him, she flushes them (needless to say, she is not on any meds).

I want to thank you for the suggestions, i will pass them on to him...
