This just came in the mail today from Amazon, my wife bought it for me as a belated birthday present (by nearly a month, but hey, the thought counts!) for the Playstation 2. I remember renting it two years ago for the GameCube and it was a helluva fun game, but it had some game-stopping bugs (I tried doing a plot quest/mission several times, and it would never let me complete it), so I'm hoping that my excursion back into the streets of New York will be bug-free on the PS2.

Can't wait to crack it open tonight!

Let me know if these bugs presist, because I was thinking about getting this game as soon as I had some cash sitting around.

My wife bought it pretty dirt cheap, under $10 with shipping and all. However, it is somewhat buggy so far, the game locked up as I was completing a mission and trying to zone out from a building. The game also has some painful load times on occasion. I think my biggest beef is with actual gameplay, because I have no means to access body armor at this point in time, don't see any way to increase my maximum health in the future and I seem to get taken out way too easily in some scenarios.

Another beef of mine is that I'm trying to play good cop, and it's just too easy to rack up bad cop points. Car handling, at least on the early vehicles (all I can afford at the moment), is pitiful, and people seem to just leap out in front of me when I'm trying to blaze through the streets to catch up to a bad guy. What's worse, it seems like every time a bad guy gets into a car he gets away, regardless of what I do. He either always outruns me, or the retarded police AI mows me down trying to beat me to them.

Don't get me started on the cops, because, since my main character only wants to wear his street clothes (I think uniforms are unlockable, but I have yet to find any), they think I'm just some thug and they gun me down while I'm trying to make busts. I can flash my badge to shut them up, but sometimes I'm in the process of cuffing a guy when they plug me, so I have no recourse whatsoever.

I have been able to clean up 5 out of 20 precincts so far, though (which seems to be a side mission), despite all that. I have yet to reach the story mission where the game stopper bug was on the GameCube, so I may not be able to report back on that for a while.

It IS fun, I know this sounds like a huge rant, but I'm just glad we didn't buy it when it was new. I think my biggest issue is that I am expecting elements from Grand Theft Auto games (manageable driving, being able to interact with strippers/hookers, city landmarks to keep you oriented), and I have to remind myself that it just isn't GTA.

Now, there are some things you can do in this game that you can't in GTA, like shaking down any shopkeeper for money or frisking random people on the streets for evidence (or, in the case of bad cops, planting evidence). You never have to buy ammo, and you don't lose weapons when you get smoked, which are definite boons. The graphics are really nice for the most part, although shadows are somewhat awkward and the ground always looks wet (the roads continuously cast a reflection of the skyline, what gives with that?), even when it's not raining.

All in all, it's decent, I haven't gotten through much of the storyline because I prefer games with "free roam time" as this game refers to it. I will have to post again when I get to the point which I had referred to previously.
