As many of you know, I run a private world of warcraft server by the name of Magrathia. I've recently been pondering what I could do that would mix my love of WoW with my love of programming.

Well finally the answer has come to me.

Through some free web hosting that is open to me via a closed beta, I have the ability to set up an HTML based News Page for Magrathia. This is of course useless though seeing as the World of Warcraft Launcher (the news page that you view before logging into the game) is programmed to only display Blizzard's own news page.

That is when this hit me:

What you see above is a Target Goal (concept art) of the new World of Warcraft launcher that I plan to make. It will allow you to view not only the original Blizzard News page, but a nice and stylish Magrathia News page as well, and switch back and forth at the push of a button.

What you don't see are my other goals. Depending on my programming limitations, I plan to make it to where, at the push of a button right on the launcher, you can switch your realmlist back and forth from Blizzard Servers to Magrathia. I also plan to re-instate the ability to choose whether or not your World of Warcraft connects for updates.

Also: I've gotten the server up for public BETA, so I'll be posting connection info soon.

UPDATE: These steps are no longer nessicary. Just scroll down and read the post where I explain a shorter version of what to do.

Alright... Here's that connection informaton I mentioned before. Follow these steps carefully. And, most importantly: Make backups of all files I list off BEFORE changing them.

First Make sure your World of Warcraft is patched up to Version 2.4.2.8278 -- if you're unsure how to tell what version of WoW you have, then you should seek assistance - PM me.

Once that's done set your realmlist.wtf file (within your World of Warcraft folder) to read the following:

Code:
set realmlist magrathia.servegame.com
set patchlist 127.0.0.1

If you've never opened up the realmlist.wtf file before, do so with notepad. And just click Save. (If you do a "save as" you'll most likely end up saving as a .txt file instead of a .wtf file, unless you specify otherwise)

Now for the hard part... This is the part I plan to work around soon, but for right now, taking this step may very well be the only thing that grants you access to the server.

You MUST edit your computers DNS Hosts file. This can be found by going to your "Windows" Directory, opening up the "System32" folder, opening the "drivers" folder, opening the "etc" folder. For most users that path is as follows:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Once there, if your an advanced user you can PM me for what to add to your hosts file. But, for the rest of you, simply download the hosts file I've attached to this post and place it over your original (again, making sure to back up the original before hand).

Now you're ready to play WoW on Magrathia. All you need to do is log in. Which, for some those of you with out accounts is as easy as sending me a PM with the following info:

Username you want to use
Password you want to use
and whether or not you have Burning Crusades.

I apologize for the complication that goes into this, and I'll set it up soon to where users no longer have to edit their hosts file or have to pm me connection info.

Soon, you'll just be able to register accounts on a website and all things work just fine...

As long as you've got about 512 MB of RAM (suggested ammount) and a few GB of your hard drive free, then yes, it'll work just fine.

But since you'll be installing fresh to the laptop, you may want to wait untill I get my server set up to where you don't have to edit so much crud in order to connect.

Alright! Sweet. I've just got everything configured nicely now.

If you want to play, all you have to do is set your realmlist.wtf file to read:

Code:
set realmlist magrathia.servegame.com
set patchlist 127.0.0.1

And make sure to create an account at http://magrathia.servegame.com so you'll have an account to log in with.

If you can't log in, check to make sure you're patched correctly to Version 2.4.2.8278 (which should, as far as I'm aware, be the latest WoW Patch that ISN'T for WotLK Alpha).

May as well format then, lol. Just make sure you either have your drivers all burned to a CD or the help of a computer technician. Otherwise, your computer might not work the way it is supposed to.

A fun concept, but one which, if busted, I'd be thrown in jail for quiet some time. Not to mention fined millions of dollars.

there is not that much difference is there just you either buy the game and login to your server or just download trial and login to your server

The trial is geared to stop working after a few days. Once it's locked up like that, there's nothing else you can do with it, except un-install it and buy the game.
